Sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) for business

Introduction

Guidance

Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) help you manage rainwater on your site by slowing it down, storing it and letting it soak away where suitable. They can reduce flood risk, cut pollution entering drains and waterways, and add green space for staff and customers.

When you plan new building work or major resurfacing, you may need to show how you will manage surface water as part of your planning application. You may also need approval from NI Water or the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) before you discharge run-off to a public sewer, a river or the ground.

This guide describes what sustainable drainage systems are, and how and when you should use them on your site.
