Advancing innovation in drug and alcohol addiction healthcare

Funding of up to £20 million across two competitions for organisations to develop pharmaceutical, digital and MedTech innovations that address drug and alcohol addiction.

This competition opens on 16 February 2026 and closes at 11am on 6 May 2026.

Who it is for

This competition is open to collaborations only.

To lead a collaborative project, your organisation must be a UK-registered business of any size.

To collaborate with the lead, your organisation must be one of the following UK-registered:

  • business of any size
  • academic institution
  • charity
  • not-for-profit
  • public sector organisation (e.g. Local Authorities, NHS service providers, Primary Care providers)
  • research and technology organisation (RTO)

Your project must:

  • have total eligible costs of between £250,000 and £10 million for a pharmaceutical, MedTech or digital intervention
  • last between 24 and 36 months
  • start on 1 December 2026
  • end by 30 November 2029

Support you can get

This competition is part of The Addiction Healthcare Goals (AHG) - Catalysing Innovation Awards scheme, which supports innovations that transform drug and alcohol addiction care, improve recovery outcomes and save lives across the UK.

For this strand, you can apply for funding of up to £3 million for each business, for each project. Funding can cover eligible project costs of up to:

  • 70% if you are a micro or small organisation
  • 60% if you are a medium-sized organisation
  • 50% if you are a large organisation

Successful applicants will be offered exclusive access to a Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) hosted education session ahead of project initiation, covering regulatory, evaluation, and reimbursement processes.

There is also a separate strand for Contracts for Innovation in drug and alcohol addiction healthcare, offering funding of up to £1.5 million (inclusive of VAT).
